What kind of dog did John Wick walk away with?

If you are a fan of the John Wick franchise, your favorite scene would have been the shot of John letting a dog out from its cage, after it had been scheduled to be euthanized. Even though it was the last scene, we knew we just kind of went back to the beginning.

What dog did John Wick have that he made so much a deal about?

Actually, the first dog he owned as seen in the beginning was a Beagle his wife gave him just before she died. But at the end of the movie, we see him walk away with what seems to be a Pitbull after he had just freed it. Pitbull is just the nickname for that kind of mixed bully breed.

More about Pitbulls

A Pitbull is a breed from mixed ancestry. It can either be an English Staffordshire Bull Terrier or a blue nose Staffordshire Bull Terrier and that’s why we can say it’s a pit bull for certain since the dog looked very close to those breeds.

Within the United States, the pitbull is usually assigned an individual grouping that includes the breeds American Pitbull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier, American bully, Staffordshire Bull Terrier, and occasionally the American bulldog. In summary, the pit bull isn’t a breed just a term used to describe such breeds.

Most pit bulls or dogs that have pitbull-type characteristics descend from the British Bull and Terrier. A 19th-century dogfighting type developed from crossings between the Old british dog and the Old English Terrier.

One of the easiest ways to tell which breed it is, is to judge by it’s temperament and intelligence. Since it is a mix with several Terrier breeds, such dogs are often found to be tenacious, smart, loyal, and often times dangerous, and just the perfect match for a super villian/super hero

Our bet should be the regular Stanffordshire rather than the Stanffordshire Bull Terrier, though they are both descendants of Pit bull lines and the difference in their appearance is very little. Stanffordshire are friendly dogs but fearless and this may cause them to be quite agressive especially when protecting someone they love.

Pit bulls as dangerous dogs

These breeds are mostly bred as fighting dogs, but after the use of dogs in blood sports were banned, these dogs were used as catch dogs. Now in America, they are mostly used to hunt and drive livestock such as cattle and then used as family companions, showering their humans with love and attention.

Despite their bad reputation as disproportionately dangerous, they often get along well with adult male, in our case John Wick. Pitbulls have been known to be very dangerous around children since the number of attacks from pitbulls skyrocketed throughout the decade.

Advocates of the breeds and other governing bodies suggest apparent agressive tendencies in pitbulls are often due to individual trainings given to the dog or it’s inherent qualities. This was brought to a debate by individual organisations digging up past medical reports showing pit bulls are responsible for half of dog bite incidents in America.

The pit bulls are highly misunderstood and this is because of the agressiveness found in only minority of their breeds anyways. Nothing could be further from the truth. But this has caused legislations against the breed in cities and most countries.

This is not a breed for everyone especially those who are not willing in spending time to training their dogs and provide consistent guidance.

But with the right training and proper socialization, Pit bulls can make a excellent companion for humans, children to be precise and that is why they are sometimes called the ” nanny dogs”.

They are extra gentle with children and maintain a puppyish demeanor even untill adulthood. They are such a family dog as they remain devoted and loyal to their owners even untill death, and maybe that’s why our hero in the movie, John Wick have a special liking for the dog.

Why was a Pitbull featured in the movie instead of other dogs?

Using a pit bull in the movie was a positive move even though, people felt pit bulls were overly sensationalized and overpopulated in hollywood movies,  but judging from Keanu Reeves character in the movie, he needed a loving friendly dog to compliment his character in that way, not showing the true nature of the dogs but their capabilities. We could see this in the  Belgain Mallinois dog Halle Berry worked and personally trained with.

Halle Berry plays Sofia, an old acquaintance of Keanu Reeves’ titular hitman, from whom he seeks help in his attempt to escape being killed for the $14 million bounty on his head. She only appears in John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum for three extended scenes.

In an interview with MTV news, Reeves revealed how he bonded with pitbull Burton back stage. Director Chad Stalenski described him as ‘ the most gentle personality you could imagine for a pit bull.

Burton was a rescue dog chosen because of his sad eyes to make the audience sympathize with him, rather than be frightened, which makes sense of the bad reps pit bulls have gained during the decade.

From intense action scenes to unexpected canine friends, we’ve had our eyes are glued to our TV screens and our hands in our popcorn bowl. And who knew, it took just a death of a pup for John Wick to take down an entire group of judo flipping bad boys.

The entire franchise is popularly known for the vulnerable sides of John wick, the dogs brought out in the movie and they play a vital role in the John Wick series. They sprung John wick back to action and acted as a motivation for his revenge, helped him in his recovery, and alongside kick some asses.
